Frame Follows Function

Friday, July 15th, 2011

The framework of this oval dome may look decorative but in fact it serves a practical purpose. Generally we divide up the sections for a dome like an orange, depending on the size or shape in this instance, breaks are required to form the panels into workable sizes.

We have done a similar frame before, but for a much larger opening, see Calloway Court from our oval dome pages. It had many more levels and layers of framework to span an opening 11′ x 17′. Using that frame as inspiration for this one, the scallops were incorporated to break up the panels and embellish the design. In this case the frame plays a significant role in the overall effect.
