The Oculus is the round opening at the top of the dome of the Pantheon in Rome, it is open to the sky and referred to as the “rain hole”. Now days a hole in the roof is less than practical but the look is still desirable, and creates an opportunity for embellishment. Our Lens sits on a small ledge underneath a round skylight. We did this Lens for Pyone Construction.

Pictured above a leaded glass window designed by William Woodworth as part of an extensive residential renovation. Also in the project we’ve done up a matching pair for the master ensuite. The shock of carefully tuned color is the perfect embellishment in this crisp interior. Two shades of each color were selected to add sophistication and complexity to the simple pallet.

This gorgeous dome is the result of a collaboration with Mark Thompson a very talented glass artist, whom used to work here at Solarium once upon a time. He brought the design to us which would incorporate some of his hand painted glass pieces, seen in the centre ring (look for a peacock feather like element), and we did the rest, from frame work, to building and installation. There were some challenging details to be worked out along the way, including accommodating the chandelier on a lift, it passes through the centre of the dome for cleaning and maintenance. Mark is also making accompanying painted leaded glass door panels. I’m looking forward to seeing it all together.
