Passing through the entry foyer and into the rotunda the eye is drawn up to our 18′ dia dome above. It is lit both naturally by a skylight, and artificially in the evening with energy efficient LED lights positioned for a soft even glow. The design and pattern inspiration is Victorian in nature reminiscent of lace work. Similar to lace work this dome has been crafted entirely by hand.
This is a 6.5′dia x 2′ ht. leaded glass dome and features a custom painted frame. The opalescent glass was specially ordered directly from Kokomo, and each jewel was sandblasted and hand painted on the reverse side in order to soften the appearance. A very subtle classic dome.
Even though it is officially spring, it was a snowy trip to Ottawa. Well worth it to see this dome installed.
Overall size 8′dia x 30″ ht.
Once the scaffolding is packed away and the chandelier installed. This will be a wonderful landing.
I will have more photos of the context once the entire project is complete, but I was excited to see this as it is. A chandelier will run through the centre.
More than 450 jewels and bevelled pieces have gone into this 8′dia dome destined for install next week in Ottawa, ON.
I have always thought our domes were jewel like but this one with its sapphire touches is much bigger than any ring I’ve ever seen.
