Painting Progress – The Stain in Stainedglass

Monday, October 21st, 2013

In preparation prior to firing, a mixture of crushed glass and pigment is mixed with a vehicle (water), then painted over each glass piece entirely, next a brush is used to stipple and shape in a subtractive fashion until the desired effect is achieved. Now the pieces are ready to be fired in the kiln.

Painted Glass Project

Thursday, October 10th, 2013

We are working on a Synagogue project, this panel represents the tribe of Asher, we are making twelve, one for each tribe of Israel.

This leaded panel is comprised of textured glass, painted glass pieces, and silver stain on the boarder.

The painted glass pieces are cut to size on the pattern, and painted with a clay like pigment mixed into a paste, which fuses to the glass when fired.

Each layer of paint is fired and cooled, repeat firings and layering of paint add depth and texture. Although there is a risk of the painted glass pieces breaking during cooling at any point in the process, if so then the entire process must be repeated. The process is time consuming and glass pieces can take up to a day to cool, but the end result is worth the extra labour and time.

The 2nd La Societe Opening in Montreal

Tuesday, June 18th, 2013

We are putting on our sequins, the grand opening of the second La Societe is in Montreal tomorrow night. Our continued collaboration with Charles Khabouth and Munge Leung now includes Lowes Hotels.

Read a little bit about it here in the National Post Shinan Govani is excited “Khabouth will recreate the magic of the jaw-dropping stain-glass ceiling that is a hallmark” of the Toronto location.

Pictured here is a sneak peak of our ceiling in the newly opened La Societe in the Hotel Vogue, Montreal. Please go visit and enjoy a lovely meal under our “jaw-dropping” leaded glass ceiling.

Exploring one man’s vision of glass ceilings – Global News

Thanks to Dave Berry for coining the term “Fussnerian” to describe Bill’s design sensibility and sum up a man who has “written the book on the technology of bringing a dome off of the drawing board and into a residential setting”.

Opening Soon in Montreal – La Societe in the Loews Hotel Vogue

Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

Our second collaboration with Munge Leung and Ink Entertainment has brought about this Art Nouveau Inspired Stained Glass 38′ x12′ Racetrack Oval Dome. It will be the main feature in the Loews Hotel Vogue; La Societe Restaurant in down town Montreal.

Special thanks to Rob Petrie for creating the stunning design drawings and our crew here Kathryn for excellent color and glass selections, Robin and Andrea for the many hours put in cutting and leading the panels, Al for his dexterous work installing and building the framework, and of course Bill, because he did everything!

I wonder if we will have our next Christmas staff party under this dome, like we did for the one in Toronto? The Munge Leung web site has wonderful photos of that project here.

Happy New Year! 2012

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

This year is looking to be a big one here at Solarium on the heals of a successful one in which we completed two of our largest projects. Fittingly we celebrated at La Societe, under our ceiling. For some it was the first time they had seen it installed outside of photos, there was a little good natured teasing on who did the best panels. Looks like a tie to me.

From all the staff at Solarium we wish you a Happy New Year!

Lets make 2012 memorable.
